My experience is, that when most people visualize a modern room design, they picture an open, pale and functional space. Sure, modern interiors are sleek, simple and organized, with (supposedly!) no clutter allowed, but that sounds a bit boring really, doesn’t it?
Using modern design elements in our homes brings great benefits.
For example, a modern home with great storage, means less clutter and more organization, which means it’s easier to find things, and therefore to get out of the door in time in the mornings!
I always gravitate towards the modern design basics, as it has definite advantages – the feeling of spaciousness, excellent storage, practical flooring, lots of light – all really good things.
But it can sometimes lack personality, and that is exactly why I’m writing this post - I want to show you that modern design can be interesting and exciting if you use the basic principles and layer your own style on top.
Can modern be done on a budget?
When you see all those perfect glossy pictures in interiors magazines, do you feel intimidated, and that the look is unachievable in your own home?
Do you know what? Sometimes, that exact look is unachievable on your budget, but that doesn’t mean to say that you can’t achieve a look that is just as good, on a much smaller budget. Modern doesn't have to be 'design-ery' and expensive.
Besides, you may already have some of the modern basics in your home, and all you need to do is add or remove some elements. Be smart about it - include some Ikea hacks, mix old and new, or higher priced items with lower priced ones to keep to your budget.
Once you've pinpointed your style, choose pieces carefully, and make your decisions with confidence – style has got everything to do with taste and very little to do with money!
The beauty of modern design
The great thing about modern design is how adaptable it is, if you prefer minimal, just leave it at the basics, but if you do want to add to it, there are so many interior styles that compliment it extremely well. So many in fact, that I’ll save some for another post!
Here are a few inspirational examples of interiors that are a mix of modern and another style.
